  1. I want to capture and record footage from my video camera to my Dell Pentium 4 desktop.
Thanks guyz, this is very helpful.

  2. Hey Fred,

I have that camera and it isn't entirely straightforward. Even if you hook up the USB cable, nothing will happen until you press the button with the two arrows in opposite directions - this is the data transfer button that lets you transfer videos over to your PC. When you click that button, the computer will then 'see' the HDD Panasonic camera. You can then use the software that came with the camera (hopefully you've installed it?) to initiate the transfer.

If you're looking to use the digital camera as a webcam to directly display video, you'll need to buy the video output cable (I don't think it comes with this camera). I think it's the HDMI? You can tell by the label on the audio-out port. I was going to do this once (for an article) but realized I didn't have the cable! With the cable, you're all set, it'll stream the video output to your PC's HDMI port. Very slick and high-quality video!

    Good luck!

  3. Hello, do you want to capture and record footage from your video camera to your computer? or you just want to show it?

If you only want to show it, you can attach a cable from your camera to your computer. Of course, for you to use the cable, it has to have the right ports on both the camera and the computer. Without knowing your camera model, I can not tell you what connections you have available. Your camera might have usb, firewire, composite, component, etc. For better results and if the connections are available I would use firewire. If you by any chance use usb, try to connect the usb cable on the back of your tower, not the front.

If you are trying to capture video from your camera to your computer, you would need a capture card on your computer. Depending what capture card you get, so are the connections available. A plain vanilla analog capture card usually has the composite(red, white for sound and yellow for video) and some also have s-video available. Newer digital capture cards may have other connections available. What you have to do is match an input in both, the camera and the computer. Let's say that you have composite input on both, just attach a composite cable to your camera and your capture card and then turn the camera on. Usually when you buy capture cards they come with some sort of basic software included. As soon as a connection is established between camera and computer you can either, open the software or if set up to open up when detecting a camera, it would turn on by itself. Then, you play with the recording format and click record. That's it. Hope it helps. Here is a link with different capture cards:
